There are two expansions, and both need the base game. Finish the seven base Games first. The Monster Box of Monsters is the harder one; The Charms and Potions is the easier one and the only way to play with five. There is no third expansion.
The two expansions side by side
The Monster Box of Monsters
- 2017, 4 boxes, 152 cards
- 2 to 4 players, adds Luna
- Creatures, encounters, Detention! cards, banishing
- Clearly harder than the base game
The Charms and Potions
- 2020, 4 packs, 161 cards
- 2 to 5 players, adds Ginny
- Charm boards, potion brewing, Dark Arts potions
- Easier than The Monster Box
Complexity is the BoardGameGeek community rating from 1 to 5. It measures how much there is to learn, not how hard the game is to win. The base game sits at 2.1.
The Monster Box of Monsters
Four new adventures around the Forbidden Forest, opened box by box like the base Games.
Reviewers and players agree it is hard: games run long and the villain draw matters a lot. It is the right choice for groups who found Game 7 too easy.
- 2 to 4 players
- Adds Luna
- Harder

The Charms and Potions
Four new packs that take the heroes back to the classrooms.
The charms are the highlight; potion brewing is a little fiddly. It feels easier than The Monster Box and works without it.
- 2 to 5 players
- Adds Ginny
- Easier

Which order to play
There is no official order between the two expansions. Most groups follow the release order, Monster Box first, but The Charms and Potions does not build on it and explains the shared rules again. Want them together? The designer allows mixing them box by pack (Box 1 with Pack 1, and so on), and the potions' banish effects help against Monster Box detentions.
Is there a third expansion?
No. As of October 2026 there are only these two, plus a handful of promo cards. Neither the publisher's shop nor BoardGameGeek lists anything newer, and no new expansion has been announced.
Promo cards
Over the years the publisher handed out a few extra cards at conventions and in promo packs. None of them are needed, and you mix them into the Hogwarts cards like any other card. BoardGameGeek lists these:
| Type | Promo cards |
|---|---|
| Spells | Silencio!, Reducto!, and two rhyming spells from the books: "Eye of Rabbit, Harp String Hum" and "Sunshine Daisy, Butter Mellow" |
| Allies | Seamus Finnigan, The Dursleys, Xenophilius Lovegood, Scabbers |
| Items | Basilisk Fang, Quibbler |
| 2020 promo set | Dumbledore's Army Coin, Antidote to Common Poisons, Colin Creevey |
Basilisk Fang works differently: set it aside, and whoever defeats the Basilisk puts it into their discard pile for free. That is a designer ruling. If you sleeve your cards, count the promos too: players report that one pack of 160 sleeves runs short once promos are in.
Not expansions: the spin-off games
Defence Against the Dark Arts
2019. A separate competitive game for exactly two players: push your opponent's marker to the edge of a practice mat and win by stunning them three times. It does not mix with Hogwarts Battle.
Death Eaters Rising
2019. A cooperative dice game set in the Order of the Phoenix year, reworked from Marvel's Thanos Rising. It shares the licence and the publisher, nothing else.
Both seem to be out of print in English.
